4 Standout Tech Features Of The Jeep Compass Trailhawk

Driving the conversation on the connected car and mobility

This article is more than 3 years old.

Vehicles come loaded with so much technology these days that it can be difficult to take it all in during a short test drive. Because I test more than 50 cars a year, certain tech features stand out as either positive or negative and on how they compare with other vehicles in the same class.

Jeeps are known for their off-road prowess – even if most people who buy them never leave the pavement. They also stand out because of their tech features since, like other FCA vehicles, they're available with the Uconnect infotainment system and other useful electronic amenities.

Here are four tech features of the 2017 Jeep Compass Trailhawk 4X4 (total sticker price $34,655) that caught my attention and deserve yours if you're considering this vehicle. Note: Since the 2017 Jeep Compass is an all-new model, the in-cabin technology in the 2018 Compass is unchanged.

Uconnect Changes

Even though the Uconnect infotainment system is long in the tooth – it was first introduced in 2011 – it's still one of the best available, thanks to its 8.4-inch touch screen (standard on the Trailhawk 4x4) and intuitive layout and controls. Uconnect has been updated over the years, and the 2017 Jeep Compass adds Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for more cloud-connected features – and a familiar interface for iPhone and Android device owners. But the system in the 2017 Compass takes away some of the connectivity options that were formerly free. The Yelp local search app, for example, is now part of the subscription-based Uconnect Access package, which is free for the first year and $14.99 a month or $149.99 per year afterwards. You get a host of other Uconnect Access features for your money, including vehicle health reports, a remote app, voice texting, and more. On the plus side, Sirius Travel Link is now free for the first five years of ownership and adds on-demand traffic, weather, fuel, movie and sports info.

On-Demand Wi-Fi Hot Spot

The Uconnect system also offers a Wi-Fi hot spot. While anyone with a smartphone can use it for a hot spot and other automakers offer this feature, with the Jeep Compass you can choose to add Wi-Fi hot spot capability to your Uconnect Access subscription. Even better, the service is available a la carte and only when you need it for $9.99 a day, $19.99 a week, or $44.99 a month.

Text Messaging That Works

Even though Uconnect in the 2017 Jeep Compass now offers Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and their own texting apps, it also has a really effective text messaging capability – which isn't always the case with many infotainment systems with the feature. The Jeep text messaging feature lets you hear, reply, ignore and forward incoming text messages – all hands-free and via voice recognition.

Standout Instrument Cluster

The 7-inch digital instrument cluster is another standout feature of the 2017 Jeep Compass Trailhawk 4X4. Not only are the full-color graphics crisp and clear, but the Jeep's Multiview Driver Information Digital Cluster can be configured in a variety of ways to show what's most important to the driver.
